Italy Receives First UH-169D Light Utility Helicopter

Italy has officially welcomed its inaugural UH-169D Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) from Leonardo, marking a significant milestone in its aviation capabilities. This acquisition is part of a comprehensive contract signed back in 2020, which encompasses a total of 25 helicopters along with essential support and training services. The full complement is expected to be delivered by 2027, enhancing the Italian Army’s operational capabilities on various fronts.

The arrival of this state-of-the-art helicopter follows the earlier introduction of two UH-169B basic trainer variants. These trainers have already been integrated into the military’s programs to familiarize crew members with the advanced systems, paving the way for the Army’s transition to a modern multirole rotary-wing fleet.

Role and Missions of the New Fleet

The newly introduced fleet of UH-169D helicopters is poised to undertake a diverse array of missions that are critical to national defense and emergency response operations. These versatile aircraft will facilitate troop transport, medical evacuations, and casualty support, as well as other functions necessary for safeguarding Italy’s national security interests both domestically and abroad.

This strategic enhancement of helicopter capabilities is not without precedent; in 2018, Leonardo secured a similar contract, agreeing to supply 22 UH-169s in a multirole variant for Italy’s Guardia di Finanza law enforcement agency. The new fleet aims to further bolster Italy’s response capabilities across a broad range of scenarios.

Statements from Leonardo Leadership

Gian Piero Cutillo, Managing Director of Leonardo Helicopters, commented on the significance of the LUH program for the Italian Army. He remarked, “The Italian Army’s LUH undoubtedly marks the beginning of a new era in terms of capabilities, technical support, mission flexibility, and interoperability in the lightweight segment.” This statement underscores the extensive improvements the new helicopters will bring to military operations.

Cutillo further emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating, “This new program leverages decades of successful partnerships and ongoing information exchange. We are committed to supporting the operator to maximize the benefits of these new helicopters.” Such dedication highlights Leonardo’s commitment to ensuring that the Italian Army fully capitalizes on the advanced features of the UH-169D.

Technical Specifications of the UH-169

The UH-169 helicopter presents impressive technical specifications, measuring 15 meters (49 feet) in length, with a rotor diameter of 12 meters (39 feet). It is designed to accommodate a range of operational needs, supporting up to 12 passengers or carrying a payload of 250 kilograms (551 pounds). In medical situations, it can also facilitate the evacuation of seven specialists and two stretchers.

Powering the UH-169 are twin Pratt & Whitney PW210A turboshaft engines, each capable of producing 1,000 horsepower. This formidable helicopter can achieve speeds of 165 knots (306 kilometers/190 miles per hour) and boasts a range of 440 nautical miles (815 kilometers/506 miles), with an impressive endurance of over four hours. Such capabilities promise to enhance the aerial response and operational efficiency of Italy’s Armed Forces.
