UK FPV Drones: Enhancing British Army Training and Tactics

The UK Ministry of Defence has taken a significant step in modernising military training by contracting Viking Arms to deliver a fleet of 180 first-person view (FPV) drones. Valued at £256,000 (approximately $336,805), this procurement is notable for its rapid turnaround, with all drones expected to be supplied within just 19 days. The order includes three models of varying sizes—60 units each of 5-inch, 8-inch, and 10-inch drones—along with essential accessories like antennas, controllers, and goggles for user convenience.

Once operational, these drones will play a vital role in the training of a new generation of drone pilots within the British Army. Designed to simulate various combat scenarios, these unmanned systems will be equipped with payloads representing anti-tank, anti-personnel, and anti-structure munitions. British Army instructors, already versed in military drone systems, will receive familiarisation training to ensure effective guidance for the new operators.

A Commitment to Technological Advancement

A spokesperson from the Ministry asserted that this swift procurement reflects the UK’s dedication to remaining at the forefront of military technology. “By investing in FPV drone training, we are providing our troops with agile, cost-effective precision strike capabilities, granting them a crucial tactical edge during engagements, whether in daylight or darkness,” they explained.

This move also aligns with the broader strategy to enhance the British Army’s capabilities, underscoring the military’s response to evolving defence challenges. The integration of FPV drones is seen as essential for adapting to modern warfare demands and boosting operational efficiencies.

Aligning With ‘Any/Any Network’ Initiative

The procurement of FPV drones is closely tied to the UK government’s Any/Any Network initiative, which seeks to ensure that any device can communicate seamlessly, irrespective of their respective platforms or technologies. This initiative aims to create a digitally interconnected battlefield where systems work together harmoniously, and the introduction of FPV drones is a key element in developing the necessary operational skills for future network-centric missions.
