UK Ministry of Defence Machine Gun Tender Overview
The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has launched a competitive tender for a new lightweight 5.56mm assault machine gun designed for dismounted troops. This initiative, known as “Project TROUBLER,” seeks to address capability gaps following the retirement of the L110 A2, a machine gun that has served extensively in operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
In a tender notice published on February 14, the MoD outlined the requirements for the new weapon, emphasizing the need for it to be lighter and more advanced than its predecessor. The aim is to enhance the mobility and combat effectiveness of infantry soldiers, while also ensuring interoperability with existing systems and accessories.
Tender Process and Vendor Requirements
Vendors interested in the tender process will need to provide detailed professional qualifications and complete a Dynamic Pre-Qualification Questionnaire. This step is crucial for ensuring that only qualified suppliers are considered for the project.
Following the evaluation of all submissions, the MoD will select the solution that best meets their criteria, prioritizing factors such as weight, performance, and overall suitability. The chosen vendor will be awarded a production contract valued at up to 4 million euros, equivalent to approximately $4.2 million.
Potential Candidates for the Contract
Despite the tender being released just last week, Belgian arms manufacturer FN Herstal has emerged as a strong contender. The company may propose its FN Minimi 5.56 Mk3 Light Machine Gun; however, its weight of 8 kilograms (17.6 pounds) could disqualify it from consideration.
An alternative option from FN Herstal is the FN Evolys Ultralight Machine Gun, which is notably lighter at only 5.5 kilograms (12.1 pounds). The manufacturer claims that this weapon “fires like a machine gun” while offering the handling characteristics of a rifle, which could appeal to the MoD’s requirements.
