Ukrainian Armored Vehicles: A New Defense Agreement

Ukrainian defense company Ukroboronprom has recently entered into a significant collaboration with Canada’s Roshel to manufacture armored vehicles in Ukraine. This agreement is set to streamline the production process as Roshel will supply essential technical documentation and necessary components. The initiative aims not only to enhance the supply of armored vehicles to the Ukrainian Defense Forces but also to boost the local economy and integrate advanced Western technologies into Ukraine’s defense framework.

Herman Smetani, Ukraine’s Minister for Strategic Industries, commented on the importance of this partnership, stating that it underscores the expansion of Ukraine’s international defense collaborations. He highlighted that Roshel’s armored vehicles are already deployed within Ukrainian forces, and local production will ensure quicker availability for combat units. This strategic move not only strengthens the military capabilities of Ukraine but also fosters economic growth by providing access to cutting-edge defense technologies.

Since the onset of the conflict in 2022, Ukraine has received over 1,000 Senator armored vehicles from Roshel. These vehicles come in various configurations, including personnel carriers and Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) variants. In 2023 alone, 200 Senator MRAPs were successfully delivered, primarily for use by the Ukrainian State Border Service.

The Senator armored vehicle is designed to accommodate up to 10 personnel and can carry a payload of approximately 2 tons. This 4×4 vehicle offers impressive ballistic protection rated at CEN B7, which is capable of withstanding 7.62 x 51 mm rounds fired from a distance of 10 meters (33 feet). Measuring 6 meters (20 feet) in length, the Senator features a 10-speed automatic transmission and is powered by a robust 330-horsepower 6.7-liter V8 diesel engine, making it both a reliable and formidable asset on the battlefield.
