Ukrainian Military T-90A Upgrades in Combat Strategy

The Ukrainian military has begun a strategic overhaul of captured Russian T-90A main battle tanks, repurposing them to engage their original operators. These modified tanks have been enhanced with a foldable mesh structure at the rear, providing significant protection against kamikaze drones. This innovative upgrade reflects Ukraine’s tactical adaptability in the face of evolving threats on the battlefield.

In addition to the rear mesh protection, the Ukrainian forces have replaced the standard side screens with Kontakt-1 explosive reactive armor. This modification aims to bolster defense against incoming projectiles. Furthermore, rubber flaps have been installed on the turrets, effectively reducing the tanks’ vulnerability to anti-tank weaponry. Notably, some components utilized in these upgrades are believed to have been salvaged from other destroyed Russian tanks, including the more advanced T-90M model.

About the T-90A

The T-90A tank is designed to meet modern combat requirements and is considered a vital asset in Russia’s armored forces. It is equipped with a 125-mm smoothbore gun capable of firing a variety of munitions, including high-explosive fragmentation and armor-piercing rounds. The tank’s automatic loading system allows it to achieve a rapid fire rate of up to seven rounds per minute, which is a crucial advantage in combat.

The crew of a T-90A consists of three members: a driver, a commander, and a gunner. The tank boasts impressive mobility, with a maximum speed of 60 kilometers per hour (37 miles per hour) and an operational range that exceeds 500 kilometers (310 miles). These specifications highlight the T-90A’s effectiveness as a frontline combat vehicle.

Creativity in Adversity

Ukraine’s capability to retrofit captured Russian T-90As demonstrates remarkable resourcefulness amid ongoing supply challenges. Reports from September 2022 revealed that young Ukrainian engineers were assembling electronic components to manufacture reconnaissance and attack drones, showcasing a grassroots innovation approach to military technology.

Moreover, Ukrainian forces have introduced a unique weapon system known as “FrankenSAM,” which integrates both Soviet-era and American technologies. This hybrid approach is indicative of Ukraine’s strategic flexibility and its efforts to adapt to the dynamic conditions of modern warfare, ensuring that they remain competitive against a technologically advanced adversary.
