Investigation Launched into Alleged Executions of Ukrainian POWs
On Friday, Ukraine announced the commencement of an investigation into the alleged execution of 268 Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) by Russian forces since the onset of the invasion in February 2022. The Ukrainian government has repeatedly accused Moscow of executing captured soldiers, including those who have surrendered or been injured during conflicts on the battlefield. This alarming situation has prompted Ukraine to call for an international tribunal to hold Russian leaders and military commanders accountable for their alleged war crimes.
According to a February report from a United Nations mission in Ukraine, there has been a significant increase in the number of reported executions of Ukrainian soldiers captured by Russian forces, with 79 killings documented since the end of August 2024. Ukraine’s prosecutor general announced that investigators have opened 75 criminal cases concerning these executions, which include 57 incidents from 2022, 11 from 2023, and 149 from 2024.

The prosecutor general’s office emphasized that this surge in executions is allegedly connected to directives from senior political and military officials within the Russian Federation. In response to the allegations, the Kremlin has adamantly denied any involvement in war crimes, countering with claims that Ukraine is responsible for the deaths of captured Russian soldiers.
