Ukrainian Soldiers Training: Spain’s Military Support

The Spanish Army is currently engaged in training about 50 Ukrainian soldiers, focusing on the planning and execution of military operations in urban environments. This training program is being conducted at the Almería military base located in southern Spain, with backing from the Rey Alfonso XIII Brigade. Prior to this urban operations module, these Ukrainian troops underwent extensive training in shooting techniques, familiarizing themselves with various weapon systems, as well as tactics for conventional combat scenarios in open fields.

During a recent visit to the Almería military base, Spanish Minister of Defence, Margarita Robles, expressed hope that this year would signal the end of the war and a victory for Ukraine. She emphasized that the Ukrainian struggle represents a broader fight for freedom and peace, which resonates with nations around the world. Her remarks underscored Spain’s unwavering commitment to supporting Kyiv in its defense efforts.

EU Military Assistance Mission Expansion

Since the onset of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Spanish Army and Navy have trained more than 7,000 Ukrainian fighters as part of the EU Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM UA). Since its launch in 2022, this initiative has provided training to approximately 60,000 Ukrainian troops, highlighting the collective efforts of European nations in bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities.

In a collaborative effort, 24 European countries have joined Spain in the EUMAM UA mission. In December 2024, the European Union announced plans to train an additional 15,000 Ukrainian soldiers by early this year. Furthermore, the European Council extended the mission’s funding for an additional two years, committing a budget of 409 million euros (around $429 million) to ensure continued support for this vital initiative.
