Universal Tank and Anti-Aircraft System for CV90

Saab has secured a contract to supply the Universal Tank and Anti-Aircraft System (UTAAS) sighting and fire control system designed for the Combat Vehicle 90 (CV90) infantry fighting vehicle. The deal, valued at 700 million Swedish kronor (approximately $63 million), was awarded by BAE Systems Hägglunds, the original equipment manufacturer for the CV90. Carl-Johan Bergholm, Head of Business Area Surveillance at Saab, emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating, “UTAAS was specifically developed for the Combat Vehicle 90, as a result Saab and BAE Systems Hägglunds have a long and strong partnership.” He also noted that the CV90 is a highly regarded combat vehicle that is currently in great demand by various armed forces globally, prompting an enhancement in production capacity.

The UTAAS integrates a sophisticated sight and fire control system, which boasts a high probability of hitting both land and aerial targets, including helicopters. With a maximum firing range of 5,000 meters (16,404 feet) and an effective range of up to 2,000 meters (6,562 feet) against aerial threats, this advanced system ensures precision. The system features a stabilized independent line of sight that maintains the target within the reticle’s center, while a fire-control computer assists in accurately aiming the weapon at intended targets.

Advanced Features and Design

Saab has explained that the beam paths for all channels of the UTAAS converge through a single aperture, which significantly enhances system stability and eliminates the need for realignment. Furthermore, the design of the upper module allows for large deflection angles both in azimuth and elevation, crucial for targeting fast-moving aircraft effectively.

The modular design of the UTAAS offers users a variety of performance and sensor options, including different anti-laser eye protection methods and a range of thermal imagers. Additionally, the system can be tailored to suit various weapon systems and can be integrated seamlessly with command and control systems. An interface for smart ammunition programming units further enhances its versatility.

Compatibility and Global Use

The UTAAS is designed to be compatible with tanks and combat vehicles, and it is currently operational within the CV90 fleets of several nations, including Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Finland, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Estonia. This widespread adoption underscores the system’s effectiveness and reliability in modern warfare.

As global military demands evolve, the UTAAS stands out as a pivotal advancement in defense technology, ensuring that the CV90 remains a formidable asset on the battlefield. Saab’s commitment to enhancing production capacity reflects the increasing interest in the Combat Vehicle 90 from armed forces around the world.
