Unmanned Ground Vehicle: Ukraine’s New Military Asset
Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence has taken a significant step in enhancing its military capabilities with the official deployment of a new unmanned ground vehicle (UGV). Dubbed Zmiy, which translates to “snake” in Ukrainian, this innovative robotic platform is designed to streamline logistics operations within combat zones. With a remarkable cargo capacity of up to 500 kilograms (1,102 pounds), the Zmiy is poised to become an invaluable asset on the battlefield.
In addition to its impressive carrying capabilities, the Zmiy is equipped with advanced ballistic and mine protection systems. This ensures that it operates effectively in high-risk environments, where traditional logistics support might be compromised. The Main Directorate for the Support of the Life Cycle of Armaments and Military Equipment has tailored the vehicle to meet the specific needs of combat situations, and by late 2024, it received NATO codification, confirming its adherence to the highest military technology standards.
‘Snake’ in Action
The name Zmiy aptly reflects the vehicle’s capabilities, as it is powered by a silent electric motor that enables it to conduct stealthy operations. Designed with metal wheels and wide ground-engaging treads, the UGV excels in navigating challenging terrains, including rough and muddy landscapes. Its speed is impressive, reaching up to 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) per hour on solid ground and 13 kilometers (8 miles) per hour off-road.
The Zmiy’s design allows it to perform in various environments; it can traverse trenches, scale steep inclines, and even cross shallow waters. Demonstrating remarkable agility akin to that of a snake, it can maneuver over small fallen trees, showcasing its versatility in diverse operational scenarios. This adaptability makes the Zmiy a critical asset for Ukraine’s military logistics, enhancing the effectiveness of ground operations.
