US Congress Approves $5.7 Billion Emergency Funding for Virginia-Class Submarines
In a significant move just days before the federal budget deadline, the U.S. Congress unveiled a temporary budget proposal that includes $5.7 billion in emergency funding for the construction of Virginia-class submarines. The bill, which aims to keep government operations running, also extends federal funding until mid-March 2024.
Following intense negotiations, the House of Representatives introduced the short-term budget, which will continue supporting the U.S. Navy’s Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines and other nuclear-powered vessel projects. The funding is intended to boost workforce pay and facilitate the hiring of qualified technicians, while also strengthening the submarine industry’s infrastructure and supporting smaller suppliers.
Defense Programs and Additional Funding Details
The Virginia-class submarine program has previously been a topic of debate in Congress. While the new bill seeks to maintain a production rate of two submarines per year, full funding for the second submarine has not been secured. However, a phased funding model will allow for investment before construction begins.
In addition to submarine-related costs, the bill allocates resources for military facilities affected by hurricanes and disasters, with plans for infrastructure improvements and crisis management by the U.S. Navy.
Last week, the House also approved a $895 billion defense spending package under the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
