Pentagon Boosts European Defense with VAMPIRE Systems

In a significant move to strengthen its global defense posture, the Pentagon has awarded a contract to L3Harris for additional Vehicle Agnostic Modular Palletized ISR Rocket Equipment (VAMPIRE) systems. This decision comes on the heels of a $40 million contract in 2023, where the U.S. secured 14 systems specifically for Ukraine. The details surrounding this new deal, including its total value and intended recipient countries, have not been disclosed, yet it signals a broader commitment by Washington to bolster defense capabilities among European allies.

Tom Kirkland, L3Harris’s Vice President and General Manager for Targeting and Sensor Systems, emphasized the system’s effectiveness. “L3Harris’ VAMPIRE has proven to be a reliable and cost-effective response to the increasing counter-unmanned aerial system (UAS) threats on the global battlefield,” he stated. This collaborative approach highlights the Pentagon’s strategy to enhance security against aerial threats, reflecting a growing urgency within international defense circles.

Capabilities of the VAMPIRE System

The VAMPIRE system is designed for versatile installation on vehicles equipped with a cargo area, enabling its operators to conduct reconnaissance missions and execute precision strikes on hostile unmanned aerial systems and remotely piloted aircraft. The system integrates a variety of advanced technologies, including the WESCAM MX-10D RSTA targeting and sensor suite, laser-guided missiles from the Advanced Precision Kill Weapons System, and Widow mission management software.

While its primary function revolves around detecting and neutralizing both aerial and ground threats, L3Harris also notes the VAMPIRE’s adaptability for maritime operations. This flexibility enhances the system’s appeal to allied forces, ensuring they are equipped to respond to a multitude of threats across various domains, making it a vital asset in current and future defense strategies.
