VCC-2 Camilino: Italy’s Key Military Aid to Ukraine
Italy’s Ministry of Defence has officially announced the decision to send VCC-2 Camilino armored personnel carriers to Ukraine, marking a significant step in response to Russia’s persistent aggression. This announcement comes as part of Rome’s latest military aid package, which represents the 11th round of assistance aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
The aid package will see the delivery of 400 armored vehicles, with a mixture of units ready for combat and others designated for use as spare parts. Notably, these vehicles will be equipped with a specific type of satellite surveillance system, which is expected to greatly enhance the Ukrainian military’s operational coordination and improve situational awareness on the battlefield.
Camilino’s Role and Background
The VCC-2 Camilino serves as the Italian Army’s adaptation of the American M113 troop transport, a vehicle initially deployed during the Vietnam War. Noteworthy modifications have been made to the Camilino, particularly regarding its chassis, which prioritizes enhanced mobility, protection, and firepower over the original M113’s passenger capacity. Recently, the Ukrainian National Police’s “Liut” Assault Brigade has incorporated the standard M113 as its primary infantry transport vehicle.
In collaboration with NATO, the Italian government oversaw the demilitarization and dismantling of over 700 old M113 personnel carriers, which had been part of the Italian Army’s fleet. Although around 1,200 of these vehicles remain in operation, many have not been active for years, with the last ten units being retired in 2021. The vehicles set for shipment to Ukraine are expected to stem from this decommissioned stock.
Specifications of the Camilino
The Camilino measures an impressive 5 meters (16 feet) in length and weighs roughly 11,600 kilograms (25,574 pounds). It is provisioned to accommodate up to nine personnel and is fortified with aluminum protective armor, featuring thicker armor plating on its front and side panels for added safety.
Under the hood, the Camilino is powered by a robust 215-horsepower six-cylinder water-cooled diesel engine, coupled with a three-speed transmission, enabling it to reach speeds of 60 kilometers (37 miles) per hour and cover distances exceeding 500 kilometers (311 miles). Its primary armament is a Browning .50-caliber heavy machine gun, providing significant firepower alongside its tactical mobility.
