The Royal Netherlands Navy and Marine Corps are set to bolster their operational capabilities with the acquisition of eight V-BAT vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) drones. This procurement, orchestrated by the Netherlands Ministry of Defence, forms part of a broader initiative to modernize defense resources aimed specifically at improving maritime intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations. The decision to integrate this system has been significantly influenced by its demonstrated effectiveness amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, as confirmed by Shield AI, the manufacturer of the V-BAT.

The V-BAT drones are equipped with advanced ISR and targeting capabilities that function independently of the Global Navigation Satellite System, making them resistant to potential electronic jamming. Recently, these drones were showcased during maritime ISR operations aboard the Dutch warship HNLMS Johan de Witt, exemplifying their operational potential in a comprehensive month-long flight trial as part of NATO’s REPMUS 2024 exercise.

Performance in High-Stakes Environments

Brandon Tseng, the president and co-founder of Shield AI, emphasized the strategic fit of the V-BAT for the missions that the Royal Netherlands Navy and Marine Corps are preparing for, which are characterized by dynamic, distributed, and high-risk scenarios. Tseng further stated, “It’s operational today, proven in the most demanding combat environments, and delivers mission-critical capabilities that no other system can match.” The emphasis on quick deployment and adaptability has positioned the Netherlands among a growing coalition of US allies selecting V-BAT for its superior flexibility and operational readiness.

The acquisition of V-BAT underscores the Netherlands’ commitment to advancing its defense technologies swiftly and effectively. With this new addition, the Royal Netherlands Navy is not only enhancing its own capabilities but also aligning with other international partners who are equally investing in cutting-edge drone technology, ensuring a state of readiness for future challenges.

Technical Specifications of the V-BAT

Weighing in at 125 pounds (57 kilograms), the V-BAT is a runway-independent platform capable of being launched and recovered from confined spaces, making it ideal for operations aboard vessels and in austere environments. The drone’s unique ducted-fan engine allows it to generate greater thrust compared to other VTOL drones with similar power, which ensures enhanced control in adverse weather conditions like high winds. With a remarkable endurance of up to 10 hours and an operational range extending to 300 miles (483 kilometers), the V-BAT sets a new standard in its category.

The drone also boasts a notable radio transmission range of 81 miles (130 kilometers) and can operate at altitudes of up to 6,100 meters (20,013 feet). Its proven versatility and effectiveness have already led to interest from various countries, including Japan and Romania, indicating a growing trend of nations recognizing the advantages offered by adopting or integrating V-BAT technology into their own military operations.
